(Oct. 12) A key member of the House Agriculture Appropriations Committee expressed support for the fruit and vegetable snack program in early October with an in-school visit in her home district.

Rep. Rosa DeLauro (D-Conn.) on Oct. 4 visited MacDonough Elementary School in Middletown, Conn., to see the fruit and vegetable snack program in action, said Lorelei DiSogra, vice president of nutrition and health for the Washington, D.C.-based United Fresh Produce Association.

The elementary school started the snack program in February of 2006, and DiSogra said DeLauro was instrumental in getting funding for Connecticut with her position as ranking member of the ag appropriations committee.

DeLauro enjoyed the interaction with the kids and was served applesauce and potato pancakes made with produce from the snack program, in addition to baby carrots, DiSogra said.

She also expressed support for the program to the local media present for the visit, DiSogra said.
