Potandon Produce LLC is unveiling four flavors of Green Giant Fresh steamer potatoes at the Produce Marketing Association’s Fresh Summit show for nationwide distribution.

The microwavable 13 ounce packages — designed to be displayed in refrigerated produce cases — feature proprietary varieties of red and yellow creamer or C-sized potatoes, said Kent Romrell, senior vice president of sales and marketing for Potandon, Idaho Falls, Idaho.

Each pack serves three to four people as a side dish, and Romrell said the typical retail price point is about $2.98 per bag. The varieties are mesquite and bacon, four cheese, garlic butter and chili sauce.

“We’ve had about seven or eight months of small tests around the country, and we’re ready to go for it,” he said.

Shelf life for the steamer packs is rated at 30 days or more.

“We recommend that people put in the vegetable section of the produce department,” he said.

Romrell said the greatest value in the new line is that cooking is quick, about 4 1/2 minutes in the microwave.

“It is very fast from preparation to the plate, so the focus we have for consumers is that it is a very fast and very simple process,” he said.

The products will be displayed at both the Green Giant Fresh exhibit and Pontandon’s exhibit, he said.
