(April 30) The fresh-cut produce category received several new additions, thanks to the Green Giant Fresh brand at the New England Produce Council’s annual convention April 25 in Boston.

First is a new line of fresh-cut sweet potato products from grower-shipper Wayne E. Bailey Produce Co., Chadbourn, N.C. Ronnie Mercer, salesman for the company, said 12-ounce, microwaveable bags of sweet potato fries, chips and cubes will be available by mid-summer. The bags will come six per case and are meant to make sweet potatoes a year-round meal item for consumers. The company also is introducing a 5- and 30-pound pail of sweet potato puree for the foodservice market.

Next, Green Giant Fresh is announcing the arrival of its line of Freshtables in the Steam Perfect easy-steam 12-ounce pouch. Jason Landry, Northern sales manager for the Green Giant Fresh label, said the self-steaming pouch doesn’t need to be punctured. This fea-ture allowed Green Giant Fresh the ability to create fresh-cut products with sauces and additional flavors that would normally leak from bags that required holes for cooking.

The line contains nine varieties, including baby carrots with chive butter, red apples and raisins with cinnamon sauce, and sugar snap peas and baby slim carrots with Southwest sauce. All of the varieties come six to a case, and suggested retail price is $3.99, Landry said.

All of the Freshtables product line for the New England area will come from processor Curran & Co., Saco, Maine.
