Canadian mushroom grower Highline Mushrooms is celebrating its 50th anniversary.

More than 800 employees marked the milestone at the company’s annual family picnic Sept. 10, according to a news release from Leamington, Ontario-based Highline.

The company, one of North America’s largest mushroom growers, was founded in 1961 in Leamington by Murray O’Neill. It began with an eight-room farm and now includes four farms — two in Leamington; one in Wellington, Ontario; and one in Kingsville, Ontario. Highline also operates a distribution center in Montreal.

The company has been an innovator in Canada, introducing products including triple-washed sliced mushrooms, organic mushrooms, blended exotic mushrooms and Vitamin-D mushrooms.

Also at the Sept. 10 picnic, Highline awarded scholarships to the children of employees. Sixteen students were awarded scholarships.
