(May 18) A federal judge Thursday sentenced Mark Kaiser, a former marketing executive at U.S. Foodservice Inc., Columbia, Md., to seven years in prison in connection with the earlier $800 million accounting fraud.

Reuters News Service reported that Kaiser was convicted in November of taking part in a scheme to create fake rebates from vendors in an effort to boost Dutch parent Royal Ahold NV's profits.

In the report, U.S. District Judge Thomas Griesa said evidence indicated that Kaiser "was the organizer and the leader of this scheme."

Kaiser can remain free on bail pending appeal. The sentence includes two years of supervised release after the prison term, plus a fine of $50,000.
