East Coast Fresh adds marketing staffer

East Coast Fresh has added Jessica Amodeo as a marketing associate.

Baltimore/Washington, D.C. business updatesA 2013 graduate of the Food Marketing Program at Saint Joseph’s University Haub School of Business in Philadelphia, Amodeo first became familiar to the Savage, Md.-based fresh-cut produce distributor and processor while attending the 2011 New York Produce Show with classmates, said Ross Foca, president.

A 2012 internship followed and, after completing the internship, she accepted a full-time position upon graduation.

Amodeo works with East Coast’s sales and project management members on all aspects of marketing and product development, Foca said.

“She has tremendous energy and a thirst for knowledge,” Foca said. “She’s bringing a new perspective to the way we look at and market products.”

Amodeo joined the company full-time last summer.

Pete Pappas & Sons relocation underway

The relocation of Pete Pappas & Sons Inc., is underway.

The Washington, D.C.-based distributor plans to open in new facilities in Jessup, Md., in early July.

The move has taken longer than expected, said Gus Pappas, president.

As of early June, Pappas has made some improvements in the cold storage building it’s renovating, including constructing a separate tomato repacking room.

The renovation also includes upgrading dock doors and installing energy-efficient lighting, he said.

The tomato repacking room features an acid-resistant epoxy floor.

The feature is critical for food safety as the epoxy doesn’t peel as paint does and the prevents acid from washing into tomatoes, Pappas said.

The 120,000-square-foot building also includes offices, employee areas as well as worker training rooms.

The new plant doubles storage capacity from the company’s Washington, D.C., operation and features a rail siding for rail shipments.

Pappas distributes tomatoes, berries, lettuce, onions, watermelon and other vegetables to retailers and wholesalers throughout the Northeast and the Mid-Atlantic.

Rahll receives food safety certification

Edward G. Rahll & Sons Inc., recently passed a food safety audit.

In the Global Food Safety Initiative audit, the Jessup, Md.-based distributor earned a 95% score, said T.J. Rahll, operations manager.

In February, Rahll received the certification from PrimusLabs in Santa Maria, Calif.

“This is a huge step for us,” Rahll said. “We are trying to build on what we have and want to continue improving. This audit tells others that we’re doing everything we need to do to keep ahead of all the regulations and making sure the products we carry and distribute to customers are safe.”
