Embracing the locally grown trend with the one of the state’s best known commodities, Riggio Distribution Inc., Detroit, has introduced an all-Michigan sliced apple line.

Dominic Riggio, president, said the decision to launch an all-Michigan line made sense for several reasons.

Depending on annual yields, the state annually takes the second or third spot in terms of apple production in the U.S., vying for the No. 2 spot with New York.

“We’ve got the supplies and it makes a lot of sense from the logistics side to go with apples that are close to us,” Riggio said.

Riggio also said retail and foodservice customers in Michigan like to promote the state’s produce because of the continuing trend among consumers who want locally grown produce.

Multiple pack options for the new sliced line include 14-ounce packs and 2.5-ounce packs for retail, in addition to 3-pound bags for foodservice operators.
