(March 28) A food company giant that is perhaps best known for its macaroni and cheese could soon be known for fresh salad entrees.

Kraft Foods is test marketing new Fresh Creations salads, which are single-serving bowls with leafy greens, and separately packaged Oscar Mayer-brand deli meat, Planters nuts and Kraft cheese and salad dressing, said Lisa Gibbons, spokeswoman.

Kraft is testing the salads in about 100 Shaw’s Supermarkets Inc. locations in the Boston area and about 100 King Soopers stores in the Denver area, Gibbons said. The markets are common testing areas for Kraft, she said.

The salads come in four varieties, Gibbons said. Classic Chicken Caesar salad contains romaine lettuce. Santa Fe Recipe Chicken has a blend of romaine and iceberg lettuces. Asian Recipe Chicken contains green leaf lettuce, radicchio, frisee and carrots. The Spinach Bacon salad contains baby spinach and grape tomatoes.

The suggested retail price is $3.99.

Gibbons said that the Fresh Creations salads demonstrate Kraft’s “more consumer-centric approach to deliver food products that best fit consumers’ wants, needs and lifestyles.”

Kraft has not yet decided whether to distribute the salads more widely.
