The New York Apple Association Inc. is using quick-response codes to help shoppers learn more about the Empire State’s tree fruit.

The Fishers-based association’s point-of-sale material includes QR codes that allow shoppers to use smartphones to view videos that show how the state’s apples are grown, packed and distributed.

The six video segments, at, show viewers how the blossoms pollinate and follows the growth and packing of the apple through the packinghouse and to the grocery store shelves.

“We’re trying to delight that sophisticated shopper not only with our fruit, but also with up-to-the-minute information technology,” Jim Allen, the association’s president, said in a news release. “Smart consumers make smart choices when they have the right information. These same consumers want information quickly.”

The association debuted the videos at the Produce Marketing Association’s Fresh Summit 2011 expo in Atlanta.
