Del Monte Fresh Produce Inc. is offering an iPhone or Blackberry app with information on its banana diet along with recipes, games and coupons for bananas and other Del Monte products.

During its recent Buy a Bunch, Lose a Bunch campaign, Del Monte invited consumers to follow it on Twitter and take the Fans of Bananas Diet Challenge to win prizes and access tips, recipes and fun healthy eating activities.

Dole Fresh Fruit, Westlake Village, Calif., which began promoting its banana diet last year, said the original was created by a pharmacist to help her husband lose weight. When he dropped 38 pounds after eating two bananas for breakfast with a glass of water, word spread and soon stores across Japan couldn’t keep the fruit on the shelves.

It appears the banana’s long list of fiber, vitamins and minerals can all work together to help control our appetite. Both companies have devoted websites to the diet to help Americans lose weight while increasing their fruit consumption.

Dole’s site includes a scientific explanation of why bananas work so well, plus two weeks of healthy and low-calorie recipes.

Eat a banana or two in the morning to jump-start your day and your metabolism and help burn calories more efficiently through the day.

Eat a banana 15 to 20 minutes before a meal with a glass of water to take the edge off your appetite.

Instead of a chocolate bar, reach for a banana between meals to combat cravings.
