From kids’ baseball to $100 grocery card giveaways to serving strawberries with whipped cream at New York’s Rockefeller Center, Cindy Jewell, marketing director of California Giant Inc., Watsonville, is about to have a busy summer.
The fun starts in late May, working with the San Francisco Giants to support children’s baseball summer camps across the country.
“It ties into health, fitness, family and big pack sizes for big events, and will run through the middle of July,” Jewell said.
To encourage consumers to use the new quick-response codes on packages, California Giant is giving away a $100 gift card every week to those who click on a microsite with their smartphone or enter the “It’s a win-win” contest through the company’s Facebook page or website.
“By using all the new technology, we’re trying to get consumers more comfortable with who we are and get them to look around our different sites and learn more about the company and our growers,” she said.
The new mobile website offers a quick smartphone-sized version of the larger California Giant website, which has more menu items and takes longer to load, she said.
As well as watching short videos about growers, consumers will have a lot more berry recipes to choose from this summer, including 50 recipes from dieticians from the American Dietetic Association, Jewell said, each with 10 or fewer ingredients.
In a less nutrition-related vein, California Giant is once again partnering with HSBC Bank in New York to offer strawberries and real whipped cream to passersby in Rockefeller Center to kick off the annual Wimbledon tennis championships in London, which begin June 20.
