With the help of digital editing and some tricks borrowed from karaoke, the Idaho Potato Commission made music video stars out of willing attendees of the Produce Marketing Association’s Fresh Summit trade show on Oct. 17-19 in Anaheim, Calif.

The Eagle, Idaho-based commission used Dance Heads to take pictures of participants’ heads and digitally put them on animated bodies, said Seth Pemsler, vice president of international and retail marketing.

Helped by words on a screen in front, participants sang along to one of four popular songs that had the lyrics rewritten to highlight Idaho potatoes.

A videographer captured the silliness and produced a souvenir CD for each singer.

Pemsler said not only does the interactive campaign promote the commission’s potato-related message in a fun way, but it also has residual.

“This is probably something you’re going to show people, and you’re going to be reminded (of our message) constantly,” he said. “The messaging will have impact more than just this one little time.”
