The 96th annual National Watermelon Association kicked off with a football theme this week in Dallas.

The convention, Feb. 17-20, continues Friday, with the State of the National Watermelon address, a seed spitting contest and the watermelon-themed annual auction.

On Feb. 20, the association's executive committee will meet, and the national watermelon queen will be crowned at the annual banquet. The queen promotes watermelons through in-store samplings and media interviews.
