(Oct. 5) Schoolchildren in New York were encouraged to eat more local fruit and vegetables during New York Harvest for New York Kids Week.

The seventh annual celebration of the state’s harvest, Sept. 30-Oct. 8, reminded the children that the state’s farms produce a variety of healthful foods.

In the past, schools have decorated cafeterias to look like farms, held pumpkin-decorating contests and taken trips to orchards to pick fruit, Chittenden said.

The agriculture department mails information about activities and resources to foodservice directors throughout the state, she said. Directors are encouraged to download ideas from the state’s Pride of New York Web site.
