(Feb. 19) CASTROVILLE, Calif. — Springtime will bring another addition to Ocean Mist Farms’ cooler.

Ocean Mist began construction in December. When construction is complete in mid-April, the company’s cooler, next to its headquarters, will boast an additional 25,000 square feet.

Previously, the cooler measured 80,000 square feet. The addition includes two rooms, one with 15,000 square feet and the other with 10,000.

Joe Pezzini, vice president of operations, said the cooler expansion was necessary to accommodate growth. As Ocean Mist expands its volume, he said, the additional cooling rooms will help the company better handle the product.

“This is especially important for our value packs since we’ll be able to convert raw product into finished goods in a completely refrigerated environment,” Pezzini said.

That includes Ocean Mist’s tray-pack artichokes, polybagged club-pack artichokes and shrink-wrapped broccoli.

New pressure-cooling tunnels in the addition will increase capacity for cauliflower and other value-pack cooling by 25%, Pezzini said.
