(May 24) SALINAS, Calif. — After his efforts at leading the leafy green industry to recover consumer confidence, Joe Pezzini, 48, chairman of the Leafy Green Products Handler Marketing Agreement, is to receive the Salinas Valley Chamber of Commerce’s 2007 Agriculture Leadership Award.

The award acknowledges individual companies, groups, associations or agencies that contributed significantly to the Salinas agriculture community.

Pezzini, vice president of operations at Ocean Mist Farms, Castroville, will receive the award Sept. 13 during a luncheon at Tanimura & Antle, Salinas, as part of the annual Salute to Agriculture.

“I’m very proud and flattered that they would consider me for this award,” Pezzini said May 23. “I’m appreciative of this honor, especially locally, to be recognized by the community for my achievements.”

Ever since the investigation began into a September E. coli outbreak that was traced to tainted spinach, Pezzini has been at the forefront, serving as the face and voice for Salinas-based agriculture. He recently stepped down as the chairman of the Grower-Shipper Association of Central California’s Board of Directors after serving in the position for the past year.
