Pear Bureau Northwest is using Twitter to reach out to consumers by challenging them to best answer the question, “What is your favorite way to have a pear?”

The Milwaukie, Ore.-based bureau, also known by USA Pears, is partnering with the Portland Farmers Market for a contest that promises a gift box of pears from The Fruit Co., Hood River, Ore., and a $100 gift card from Powell’s books to the writer of the best tweet.

The contest begins Sept. 21 and lasts through Sept. 27. Twitter users should tweet to www.twitter.com/portlandfarmers, according to a news release.

Portland Farmers Market is no stranger to social media outreach, and claims to be one of the most fanned U.S. farmers markets on Facebook and one of the most followed on Twitter.

“Portland Farmers Market brings the best of the country to the heart of the city,” said Ann Forsthoefel, executive director of the market, in the news release. “We’re really pleased to be on social media to help connect farmers, growers, ranchers and market-goers with each other in conversation.”

The bureau and the market are using Courtenay Hameister’s Live Wire! radio show on Oregon Public Broadcasting to kick off the contest. The radio stations plans to enter the first “tweet” and officially start the game.

The rules: any tweet containing @portlandfarmers and the word pear, or an abbreviation including “pr,” “p” or “per,” will be eligible for the prize. Also, a second prize will be given to the Twitter user who retweets, or reposts, the most tweets. That winner will take home a Portland Farmers Market tote bag.

The bureau expects to announce the winner Oct. 2 via Twitter, after Cristie Mather, communications manager for the bureau; Matthew Dickman, author of All-American Poem, and Cory Schreiber, co-author of Rustic Fruit Desserts, nail down the top tweet.
