(Aug. 17) The Pear Bureau Northwest, Milwaukie, Ore., has hired a new public relations manager, Cristie Mather, just in time for the region’s pear season.

Mather started her new job Aug. 16, said Kevin Moffitt, president of the bureau. She succeeds Laura Wieking, who resigned from the bureau in June.

Mather is new to the produce industry. She said she most recently worked for about four years for the National Multiple Sclerosis Society Oregon Chapter, Portland, where she was responsible for communications work and fundraising activities.

Before that, she worked for two years as an administrative liaison and grant writer for a cancer research center.

Mather said she is excited about her new job and is pleased to be promoting a nutritious product.

“And it helps that my favorite fruit is pears,” she said.

On her first day, she said she was already preparing for the bureau’s upcoming Pear Panache marketing program, which will feature a new chef and recipes each month beginning in September. The details of that program are still being worked out, she said.
