(July 14) The Perishables Group has added one current and one former property of Netherlands-based Royal Ahold NV to its client list.

Recently signed agreements with East Dundee, Ill.-based Perishables Group will give Giant Food Stores Inc., Carlisle, Pa., and Bi-Lo/Bruno’s, Mauldin, S.C., access to data on sales and category management.

Accessing category development and tracking data is a burgeoning trend among retailers, said Bruce Axtman, president and chief executive officer of the Perishables Group.

“There is some momentum coming from the retail side as it relates to perishables,” he said July 12. “I think, from a big-picture perspective, it’s just the overall increased attention that perishables are getting at retail, with the realization of how important perishables are now and will continue to be as a competitive strategy.”

Part of that strategy involves coming up with ways to compete against emerging formats, such as supercenters and specialty- or organic-focused stores, Axtman said.

The Perishables Group has had a working relationship with ACNielsen Corp., New York, for nearly three years, providing sales-tracking data for its clients.
