(Jan. 30, 4:25 p.m.) Ocean Mist Farms, Castroville, Calif., is breaking tradition by promoting a nonfamily member to the post of chief operating officer.

Joe Pezzini got the nod for the position at the family-owned company.

Pezzini has been vice president of operations for Ocean Mist. His promotion is effective immediately.

“Joe is a true champion of Ocean Mist Farms, a leader who is keenly suited to help plan and direct our growth and success,” Ed Boutonnet, president and chief executive officer of the 84-year-old company, said in a written statement.

Pezzini will be responsible for strategic planning while retaining his current responsibilities overseeing operations and human resources.

Boutonnet continues as chairman of the board, president and chief executive officer of the company.
