PMA Foundation for Industry Talent has awarded its second Tip Murphy Scholarship for Leadership Excellence to Nichole Towell, marketing development manager in the Wellington, Fla., office of Duda Farm Fresh Foods Inc.

PMA awards FIT scholarship

Towell plans to use the award to cover expenses for the Produce Marketing Association’s 2010 Leadership Symposium scheduled for Jan. 13-15 in Dallas, Texas.

Duda Farm Fresh Foods Inc. is the fresh division of Oviedo, Fla.-based A. Duda & Sons Inc.
The Newark, Del.-based PMA started the scholarship in honor of Terrence “Tip” Murphy, a former PMA board member and division vice president of sales for Irwindale, Calif.-based Ready Pac Foods Inc., who died in 2008.

The scholarship funds cover expenses for industry members to attend PMA leadership events.

“Our scholarship committee felt that Nichole’s personal statement in particular eloquently demonstrated her commitment to the industry and her passion for furthering her personal and professional development,” PMA FIT executive director Cindy Seel said in a news release.

“She was the best of a very strong field of deserving applicants. In coming years, with support from the industry, we would love to expand this program to afford more of our emerging leaders the opportunity to attend key industry events like PMA FIT’s Leadership Symposium.”

Towell has worked 11 years in the produce industry, spending the past nine years at Duda.  She previously worked for King City Nursery, King City, Calif.

In the release, Towell said her mission throughout her career will be to give back to the produce industry through leadership and by promoting sustainable business practices industry-wide.
