PMA FIT scholarships awarded

Two produce executives, Julia Inestroza and Tracie Levin, will be going to a Produce Marketing Association event free in 2011.

The annual Tip Murphy Scholarship for Leadership Excellence, awarded by the PMA Foundation for Industry Talent, covers registration and hotel expenses for a PMA or PMA FIT professional development event in 2011. According to a news release, options include PMA FIT’s Leadership Symposium Jan. 19-21 in Dallas, PMA’s Foodservice Conference July 29-31 in Monterey, Calif.; and PMA’s Fresh Summit Oct. 14-17 in Atlanta, Ga.

Inestroza is marketing director at Gourmet Trading Company in Los Angeles, Calif. Levin is general manager of M. Levin & Co. in Philadelphia.

The scholarships, announced Dec. 15, posthumously honor industry veteran Terrence “Tip” Murphy.

Inestroza worked at Agribuys, now Food Link Online, before joining Gourmet Trading Co. She recently earned a master’s degree in business administration with a specialization in technology and operations management from California Polytechnic State University, Pomona, graduating first in her class. She is also part owner of her family’s San Joaquin Valley citrus farm.

Levin works at her family’s wholesale fruit and vegetable distribution business, one of four women representing its fourth generation. She received the 2008 Frieda Rapoport Caplan Family Business Scholarship and is a 2009 graduate of the United Fresh Produce Association’s 15th Produce Industry Leadership Class.
