(Feb. 7) Pro*Act, the Monterey, Calif.-based network of fresh produce suppliers for the foodservice industry, is taking its food safety and security programs to the next level.

In a Feb. 5 news release, Pro*Act announced recently hiring Michael Jantschke as director of food safety.

Jantschke takes on the new role backed by 20 years of food safety, sanitization and quality experience, Pro*Act said. Most recently, Jantschke ran a food consulting business, and prior, he was a senior level scientist advising members of the Grocery Manufacturers/Food Products Association on food safety and compliance issues.

Pro*Act said Jantschke also held positions with Dole Packaged Foods and Dole Thailand Ltd.

"Pro*Act has always been a leader in food safety and security," Pro*Act president and chief executive officer Steve Grinstead said in the release. "Michael’s appointment will enable us to take these programs to the next level."

The organization said Jantschke would work to strengthen its compliance requirements with suppliers and distributors, while also working with Pro*Act customers and industry committees on food safety and regulatory matters.

“Recent events have created a paradigm shift in the produce industry that must be addressed across the supply chain,” said Grinstead. “Michael’s experience and education are perfectly suited to the task at hand.”
