(Feb. 17, 2:25 p.m.) Rep. Adam Putnam, R-Fla., is scheduled to formally announce his candidacy for the office of Florida Agriculture Commissioner Feb. 18.

The four-term congressman plans to make the announcement in hometown of Bartow, Fla., with the Polk County Courthouse as the backdrop.

Putnam is a former member of the U.S. House of Representatives Agriculture Committee, and the House’s Rules Committee and the Budget Committee.

Putnam has a citrus and cattle background and industry leaders say he has become a quick study on all of agriculture.

In 2006, he became chairman of the House Republican Conference.
