(March 30) Spinach sales are recovering from the September E. coli outbreak, and Salinas, Calif.-based River Ranch Fresh Foods LLC is launching six new products under its Popeye Fresh label.

“The category continues to rebound,” said Bruce Knobeloch, vice president of marketing. “We hope some of these products can help drive the category.”

Knobeloch said River Ranch’s sales had returned to within “percentage points of our historical numbers.”

The new offerings include three 2.5-ounce salads in rigid, compostable polylactic acid-based tills. The ready-to-eat products are spring mix, baby spinach and baby spinach and spring mix.

Three other products are family-style salad bowl kits: a 20-ounce Caesar salad including romaine, dressing, parmesan cheese and croutons; a 15.5-ounce tangy bacon salad that includes baby spinach, bacon dressing and croutons; and a 15.5-ounce kit that includes green leaf, frisee, radicchio and carrots along with balsamic vinaigrette dressing, almonds, dried cranberries and feta cheese.

The bowls, like the tills, also are rigid, compostable polylactic acid-based containers. All six items have tamper-proof seals and are available for retail and foodservice customers.
