(Feb. 21) Pleasanton, Calif.-based Safeway Inc. has hired Des Hague, formerly president and chief executive officer of Hot Stuff Foods LLC, Sioux Falls, S.D., to be Safeway’s president and general manager of perishables.

Teena Massingill, manager of corporate affairs for Safeway, said Hague would ease the burden on Rojon Hasker, who had been responsible for Safeway’s perishables and lifestyle departments.

“Safeway has been building and remodeling so many stores (that) the lifestyle responsibilities for Ms. Hasker had increased dramatically,” Massingill said.

Hague will be responsible for produce, floral, meat, seafood, food service and bakery, Massingill said. She said she does not anticipate any major changes in those areas of the stores.

Hague had been at Hot Stuff Foods for three years. Before joining the Sioux Falls company, he was vice president of fresh food merchandising for 7-Eleven, Dallas.

Safeway has more than 1,700 stores in the U.S. and Canada.
