(Dec. 9) Little over a year after taking the job, Chuck Sinks has stepped down as president of sales and marketing of Gallo Produce Food Products, Kansas City, Mo.

Sinks, who joined Gallo in October 2001 after a long career with Dole Fresh Fruit Co., Westlake Village, Calif., left in November. Rosemary Gallo, Gallo’s chief executive officer, said Dec. 4 the company was considering two finalists for the position. She did not say when a decision would be made.

Sinks, an 18-year Dole veteran, left Dole, where he had worked as vice president of customer relations, for family reasons. The Lawrence, Kan., native said after joining Gallo that he looked forward to switching from the vendor’s to the wholesaler’s side of the fence.

Sinks launched a new business approach at Gallo based on gauging progress by yearly sales. To drive sales growth, Gallo under Sinks formed partnerships with Kansas City-area wholesalers including Associated Wholesale Grocers, Kansas City, Kan., and Fleming Cos. Inc., Lewisville, Texas.

In practice, the new approach for Gallo meant partnering with area wholesalers on tomato and repacking programs and supplying shorts when needed. Under Sinks’s watch, the program showed sales increases of 70%, Sinks reported in August.

Also under Sinks, Gallo expanded its distribution net to include Oklahoma, which had been covered by Gallo in the past but had been dropped for a time. Lincoln, Neb., was another market Gallo cracked under Sinks, with wholesaler partnerships there and in Omaha helping to pave the way.
