A summer and fall affair before, the certified farmers market at Natividad Medical Center in Salinas, Calif., is going year-round — or as close as weather allows.

The market has opened outside the hospital’s outpatient services wing, building 200. It will operate 11:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. every Wednesday.

“It was a seasonal market that ran June through October; this year it will be March through November,” said Jessica McKillip of JCM Management, which runs the market.

“It’s part of the hospital’s wellness promotion,” she said. “They are trying to promote preventive measures like fresh fruits and vegetables. People need to eat healthy all year.”

A changing mix of six conventional and certified organic vendors will supply the market, but California rains cut that to three for the March 23 opener as some growers opted to drain fields instead or avoid travel.

They sell a mix of row crops, berries, nuts and specialty items.

Once a city use permit is secured within a few months, the farmers market plans to advertise locally, McKillip said, to boost sales.

The hospital is at 1441 Constitution Blvd. in Salinas.
