(Oct. 29) James Lee Sanderson, president of Sanderson Farms, Monte Vista, Colo., died Oct. 22 at age 55.

Born July 31, 1948, and raised in the San Luis Valley, he was the second generation to run his family’s farm, whose main product is potatoes. The company built a warehouse and became incorporated in January 1978. More commonly known as Jim, he became president of the farm after his father, Everett, died in 2002.

Sanderson was a man who loved the mountains and the Beatles, said Nina Barton, office manager of Sanderson Farms. He loved to go fishing in the surrounding area and follow old trails. He enjoyed four-wheeling and his black lab, Minnie.

When Sanderson wasn’t working with the farm, he was involved in the lives of his two children, Christopher Scott and Sara.

He served on the Sargant Community School Board and was known to give donations to the school’s athletic programs.

“He was always there for his children and grandchildren,” Barton said.

Sanderson is survived by his wife, Mary, his son and daughter and three grandchildren.
