An estimated 15% more dried plums than last year will be produced in California this season.

About 95,000 tons of dried plums are expected from the Golden State, up from 82,311 tons in 2013, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s National Agricultural Statistics Service’s annual forecast.

While up from last season, the 2014 total would be 27% lower than the five-year average of 130,000 tons, according to the forecast.

Production is up even though acreage is expected to fall from 51,000 in 2013 to 49,000 this season.

Almost all dried plums grown in California are of the French prune variety.

According to the Sacramento-based California Dried Plum Board, 2014 nursery sales of prune trees are expected to be 204,781, down 36% from 2013. But in 2015, the board projects sales to increase by 42% to 291,802 trees.

California produces 99% of U.S.-grown and 41% of the world’s supply of dried plums, according to the board, which represents 900 growers.
