The Michigan Apple Committee’s new website is designed to be more user-friendly for consumers, growers, retailers and media.

“We decided it was time to freshen our look to make it more accessible,” said Diane Smith, executive director of the Lansing-based committee. “It’s been a number of years since we updated it.”

The new site,, went live Aug. 29, Smith said.

Visitors to the site can expect to find new material more frequently.

“It’s easier for staff to update regularly so the content is always changing,” Smith said. “We customized it to what we needed.”

The site features a new look for Michigan apples, Smith said, with information that consumers want, including recipes, apple variety uses and places to buy Michigan apples.

“It’s a really easy tool for anyone who wants to learn about Michigan apples.”

For growers, there’s a section with storage reports, industry reports conducted by Michigan State and Cornell universities and other data and information.

For farmers markets in Michigan, it’s easier to update their information on the site, Smith said.

All the materials that made it onto the new site have been updated, Smith said. She said the site and social media are the committee’s main channels of communication with consumers.

Links to the committee’s social media channels have been integrated into the new site.

“It’s important for our look and the information we share to be fresh and dynamic.”

On the new site, consumers can find health information, locate farm markets and cider mills.

They can also find educational activities for kids, Smith said. By clicking on a link the committee’s blog, consumers can read guest food bloggers and learn about apple-related events in their area.

It’s the committee’s job, Smith said, to educate and communicate with consumers about the quality and many uses of Michigan apples.

The new site design, she said, is efficient and easy to navigate, making it easier for the committee to provide up-to-date information to consumers and industry insiders.

To build the site, the committee worked with Web Ascender, a Web design firm based in Okemos, Mich., Smith said.

While it’s already up and running, the new site also has some more evolving to do.

“We plan to beef up the kids’ section in the next few months.”

The committee also is developing an infographic on the healthfulness of Michigan apples. It will be posted on the site as soon as it’s done, Smith said.
