KINGSVILLE, Ontario — Ron Lapos, president of Special Edition Marketing, decided this year was as good a time as any to expand the business.

Special Edition has contracted with Multi-Acre Greenhouses Inc. and Cliff-View Greenhouses Inc. to handle their sales.

“They were looking to work with their own marketer, and we need new, fresh ideas,” Lapos said.
“We’ll be coming out with new things, new ideas, and we’ll be increasing our product lines.”

Specialty items are in high demand, and are something Special Edition is considering, Lapos said.

The company started marketing Leamington cucumbers with the new growers in January, and Lapos said he’s expecting to have Canadian tomatoes by the end of March, peppers by the first week of April.

The new growers will mean bigger volumes of cucumbers and peppers, with tomatoes remaining about the same for now, Lapos said.

“Before it’s over, we may increase on tomatoes,” he said.

The company plans to announce a newly reorganized sales staff shortly, Lapos said.

In addition, the company expects to launch some new greenhouse vegetables this year or in coming years, with eggplant on its way, Lapos said.

In early January, more than 75% of Special Edition’s growers’ cucumbers were in the ground, with peppers and tomatoes expected to be planted before the end of the month.
