(Oct. 5) A fruit grower in New York has received a state grant to research the feasibility of adding a packing line so it could serve as a supermarket supplier.

Singer Farms LLC, Appleton, N.Y., was awarded $15,000 through the state’s Farmland Viability Program, said partner Jim Bittner.

Singer Farms sells primarily to large farm stands in western New York, eastern Pennsylvania and eastern Ohio, said Bittner, who also is the president of the New York State Horticultural Society, Geneva, N.Y.

The grant will fund the investigation of what packing facilities and what types of packaging would be required for Singer Farms to become a successful wholesaler for supermarkets. It also will analyze the economic feasibility of becoming a packer.
