A south Florida grower is being recognized for her volunteer work with the state’s Agriculture in the Classroom program.

South Florida grower honored for volunteer work

Jessica Borek, president and owner of JVB Farms, Homestead, Fla., has been named outstanding volunteer of the year for her volunteer participation in the program’s yearly Florida Agriculture Literacy Day and Farm City Week events as well as her support of the Dade County Farm Bureau.

JVB Farms’ tomatoes, corn, green beans, eggplant and okra are marketed through the Homestead Pole Bean Cooperative Inc.

Martina "Teena" Borek, a relative of Jessica Borek, won the state’s Woman of the Year in Agriculture award in 2004.

In other Florida Agriculture in the Classroom news, the organization has named Vina Jean Banks as its new chairwoman.

South Florida grower honored for volunteer work

Banks, director of agribusiness for the Florida State Fair, succeeds Cara Martin, the Florida Farm Bureau’s former assistant director of government and community affairs who ended her two-year term earlier this year, according to a news release.

Banks has been chairwoman of the Florida Federation of Fairs and Agriculture Committee’s agriculture committee and has also been involved in expanding the Hillsborough County Agriculture in the Classroom program, according to the release.
