Central American adds sales staff

Central American Produce Inc., Pompano Beach, Fla., has added to its sales and marketing staff.

In April, retail veteran Jim Vohsen joined as a salesman while in June, Shannon Barthel became director of marketing.

Vohsen worked 34 years in produce and floral buying for Publix Super Markets Inc., Lakeland, Fla., as well as East Coast sales for Parlier, Calif.-based Custom Produce Sales.

After retiring from Publix, Vohsen worked sales for Central American, said Michael Warren, president.

Barthel previously worked nine years as the company’s product manager for melons.

She returns after working as West Coast division director for Southern Specialties Inc. in Pompano Beach, Warren said.

Vohsen focuses on tropical sales while Barthel’s addition is to help the company’s overall growth as well as in tropicals, Warren said.

Southern Specialties changes lime label

Southern Specialties Inc., Pompano Beach, Fla., plans to market its limes under its Southern Selects label.

The grower, importer, processor and shipper had been marketing its Guatemala Persian limes under its Paradise label but decided to sell them through the company’s main Southern Selects label, said Charlie Eagle, vice president of business development.

“We wanted a consistent identity throughout the line for our retail products,” he said.

Southern Specialties is expanding its Guatemala acreage.

The company now grows and ships from 2,000 hectares, Eagle said.

Southern Specialties also distributes Mexican limes through its McAllen, Texas, operation.

Southern Specialties also ships asparagus, artichokes, green beans, baby vegetables, berries and specialty peppers, specialty tomatoes and specialty lettuce from the U.S., Canada, Central America, and South America.
