(Oct. 10) A Michigan State University student who became sick after eating salad filed a lawsuit against Aunt Mid’s Produce Co., Detroit, on Oct. 9, the same day the company began processing iceberg lettuce again following an E. coli outbreak.

Dominic Riggio, Aunt Mid’s president, has not revealed the name of the lettuce supplier but said about 100 samples tested by the company, a third-party lab and the state of Michigan were negative.

Foodservice customers have been eager to receive the processed lettuce after the hiatus.

“The customers want it,” Riggio said Oct. 9. “Response has been supportive and overwhelmingly positive.”

More than 40 people, including students at two universities and inmates at a county jail, became ill in September, and the Michigan Department of Community Health linked iceberg lettuce from Aunt Mid’s to the outbreak.

Seattle foodborne illness attorney on Oct. 9 announced he filed the lawsuit on behalf of Samantha Steffen. This is the first lawsuit related to the outbreak.
