(March 14) Bakersfield, Calif.-based Sun World International LLC further cemented its position in South America by establishing an office in Santiago, Chile, and hiring Rafael Parada to head the office.

David Marguleas, Sun World senior vice president for licensing and corporate development, said Parada, who previously worked in Chile for Chiquita Brands International, Dole Chile and other Chilean grower-shippers, is responsible for all of Sun World’s operations in Chile.

Marguleas said among Parada’s high priorities is developing more Chilean growers to produce Sun World proprietary table grapes and stone fruit to complement the company’s California production of those crops.

“Ultimately, what we’re trying to achieve is year-round availability of our fruit and brands,” Marguleas said.

He said Sun World’s domestic production would mean the company’s labels, such as Black Diamond plums, Honeycot apricots and Scarlotta red table grapes, will be available to retailers from May through September and, via imports from Chile, from December through March.
