(Aug. 13, 2:28 p.m.) Sunkist Growers Inc. has promoted four men as part of a restructuring in its sales department.

Brian Slagel, formerly regional manager for the central division, has accepted the new position of director of business development and will be based in Orlando, Fla.

Meanwhile, Slagel’s brother, John Slagel, will be director of the Sherman Oaks, Calif.-based cooperative’s eastern sales operations center in Pittsburgh, where the company has combined its eastern and central regional offices. John Slagel previously was regional manager of the eastern sales division.

Bruce Simmons, previously western regional sales director, has been named director of foodservice sales. He is based in Salt Lake City.

Director of corporate communications Claire Smith said Sunkist had the foodservice position previously but it had been vacant for some time.

“Foodservice is so important we reestablished the position,” she said.

Lance McMillan, who joined Sunkist’s national sales office in Visalia, Calif., in 2002, has filled the new position of manager of national sales accounts.

Smith said advances in technology have allowed Sunkist’s sales staff to work from virtual offices. She said that though the company has closed some physical office spaces, the company will continue to have account managers working in 17 locations in the U.S. and Canada.

“It makes us more cost effective, but the bigger benefit for us and the customer is that it allows our sales people to spend more time with the customer rather than being stuck in an office,” she said.

Smith said no jobs were eliminated as part of the restructuring.
