(May 6) MINNEAPOLIS — A new deal will allow Supervalu Inc., Minneapolis, to increase its grocery sales to a growing Minneapolis-based supercenter format retail chain. In the broadened grocery supply agreement announced April 30, Supervalu will supply groceries to 74 SuperTarget stores and 400 regular Target stores by the end of the summer.

Supervalu now supplies half of the SuperTargets and 270 regular Target stores. The additional stores Supervalu will supply are reported to be either new stores or locations that rival wholesaler Fleming Cos., Lewisville, Texas, had supplied.

“The agreement symbolizes our ability to be a strategic partner to SuperTarget and will allow us to support their aggressive expansion,” said Polly Deane, a Supervalu spokeswoman.

Fresh produce will be supplied only to the SuperTargets, full-service grocery stores combined with regular Target stores, Deane said.

A Target media spokeswoman declined comment.
