(Aug. 11) As part of an aggressive expansion program, Houston-based Sysco Corp., the largest broadline foodservice distributor in North America, has unveiled plans to build a 290,000-square-foot distribution facility in Longview, Texas.

The Aug. 7 announcement came about two weeks after Sysco said it was purchasing Springfield, Ill.-based Bunn Capitol’s foodservice business for an undisclosed sum.

Sysco said Aug. 7 the new Longview facility, designed to serve foodservice clients in eastern Texas and parts of Louisiana and Arkansas, likely would be operational early in 2008.

Four Sysco branches currently supply that region.

“Establishing a local presence in that region will provide market penetration and expense reduction opportunities,” Sysco chairman, chief executive officer and president Richard Schnieders said in a news release.

The new center is part of a fold-out strategy wherein Sysco builds facilities in an area served by more-distant Sysco branches.
