(March 30) Brian Sturgeon will have a new boss this summer.

Sturgeon, president and chief executive officer of FreshPoint Inc., Sysco Corp.’s Houston-based produce distribution arm, said he will report to Kenneth Spitler when Spitler’s promotion to president and chief operating officer takes affect July 1.

Spitler has overseen Sysco’s broadline operations as executive vice president and president of North American foodservice operations, while Larry Accardi — who plans to retire in December — has served as executive vice president of contract sales and president of the specialty division companies. In that role, Accardi had oversight of Sysco subsidiaries such as FreshPoint and the Sygma Network Inc.

Spitler will have oversight of the company in his new role, but Sturgeon said the changes are not likely to affect FreshPoint.

“Sysco has been really good,” Sturgeon said. “The day-to-day decisions are left up to us.”

Spitler’s promotion and Accardi’s retirement were just two of several moves announced by Sysco in late February, including the promotion of Joseph Barton from group president of sourcing for the company’s strategy group to senior vice president of sourcing.
