(Feb. 1) Minneapolis-based Target Corp. will open its first company-owned perishables distribution center in Lake City, Fla., in late summer 2008.

The firm announced in a news release that the center will stock frozen, refrigerated and fresh produce for distribution in the Southeast.

Target said it would operate the facility in partnership with Minneapolis-based distributor and retailer Supervalu Inc.

"Our food offerings continue to expand across all Target store formats, and we felt now was the right time to enhance our internal capabilities with respect to the direct sourcing and food distribution center management," Mitch Stover, senior vice president of distribution services, said in the release.
