(April 30) British retailer Tesco plans to open more than a dozen of its new Fresh & Easy Neighborhood Market stores in Las Vegas.

The company on April 26 announced that 14 sites in Las Vegas have been chosen, with more locations being scouted. The company chose Las Vegas because of its fast growth and market potential, according to a news release.

“Las Vegas is known for its cutting-edge and fast-paced culture, which makes the area a perfect fit for Fresh & Easy Neighborhood Markets,” said Tim Mason, chief executive officer, in the release.

The company plans to open other stores later this year in San Diego, Los Angeles and Phoenix, the release said.

Each store is expected to be about 10,000 square feet.

Fresh & Easy employs 150 people in its El Segundo, Calif., headquarters, and plans to add more than 2,500 jobs when the stores begin operating later this year, the release said.

The release also highlighted Fresh & Easy’s commitment to environmentally friendly practices, including the use of solar panel roofing, LED lighting, recycling and waste reduction. A $13-million, 500,000-square-foot solar panel installation is being built on the company’s distribution center in Riverside, Calif.
