(Oct. 15) Professional and amateur cooks alike are invited to participate in the first-ever recipe contest sponsored by Mission, Texas-based TexaSweet Citrus Marketing Inc.

The Rio Star Grapefruit Recipe Challenge, which begins Oct. 15 and ends Feb. 15, is co-sponsored by Rio Grande Valley citrus growers and “Taste of the South” magazine.

One goal of the contest is to highlight the versatility of the rio star, which is sweeter than other grapefruits, said Eleisha Ensign, TexaSweet’s executive director.

To that end, prizes will be awarded in three categories: salads, main courses and desserts. Winners in all three categories will be chosen from a professional and from an amateur division.

Each category and division winner will receive $500, and a grand-prize winner from each division will receive $1,000.

Winning recipes will be published in Taste of the South.
