(July 1) Del Cathey, 83, of Reedley, Calif., died June 12. The produce veteran had been a grape grower since 1946, his career in the industry totaling 56 years.

Cathey most recently worked assisting growers in Sonora, Mexico, until he retired in 2000. He was once deputy director of the California Department of Fruit and Vegetables Quality Control, a branch of the California Department of Food and Agriculture.

He retired from the Department in 1974 and returned to growing grapes in the Coachella Valley with Richard Peters Farms and Fowler Packing Co. Inc., Fowler, Calif. In 1987, Cathey joined his son, Jim, in Nogales, Ariz., to work in the Mexican grape industry with Los Angeles-based Robling and Catalani Inc. and Produce Kountry, Nogales. Working there until his retirement in 2000, he assisted many growers in Mexico, helping them to develop their vineyards and to compete in the early summer grape deal.

In addition to his son, Jim of Nogales, Cathey is survived by his wife of 60 years, Iva of Reedley, as well as his daughter, Dianne of Reedley.

The Del Cathey Memorial Scholarship has been set up at Reedley College in his memory. It is to benefit local Hispanic students wishing to study agriculture. The family asks that donations be made to the Reedley College Foundation, 995 N. Reed Ave., Reedley, CA 93654.
