David Coates, 54, president of Coates Farm Produce Inc., Roselawn, Ind., died April 13 in Sarasota, Fla.

After experiencing chest pains, the watermelon grower-shipper drove himself to a Sarasota emergency room, where he died shortly after, growers said.

Coates, who had deals throughout the Midwest and in Florida, owned the company previously run by his parents, Vearn and Doris Coates.

Working in the produce and trucking industries, David Coates also owned Coates Farm of Sarasota, CFT and D& D Farms.

“I think David was well-liked and always had the industry at heart and tried to do the right thing,” said Greg Leger, president and partner in Leger & Son Inc., Cordele, Ga.

Coates is survived by three sisters, four nieces and three great nephews.

Visitation is scheduled for the evening of April 16 at the Manisota Memorial Park & Funeral Home in Bradenton, Fla.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions to the American Heart Association, the American Cancer Association and the American Diabetes Association.
