(April 16) Wendy’s International Inc., Dublin, Ohio, recently announced sales results for the month of March. A rise in salad sales, led by the restaurant chain's Garden Sensations salad, led to first-quarter sales and earnings performance that were stronger than expected, said John Barker, vice president of investor relations for the company.

Wendy's U.S. restaurants had a 6.1% increase in sales in March, Tim Hortons Canadian stores increased 7.7% and Tim Hortons in the U.S. saw a 10% increase. Barker said the new salads were an important part of the sales growth, as the salads recorded sales increases in the high single digits, he said.

Wendy's expects to announce first-quarter earnings per share of $0.39, an increase of 18.2% from the same time last year. Wendy's will publish quarter financial reports May 1.
