(June 5) FRESNO, Calif. — Six months after launching a fresh produce salsa kit under the Old El Paso label, Z&S Distributing Co. Inc. is about to unveil a new salsa kit with a taste twist — peaches.

Z&S Distributing plans to offer the peach salsa kit from June 15 through Labor Day weekend, the first week in September, said Justin Bedwell, director of marketing.

The salsa kit, distributed in a 24-ounce clamshell, contains an onion, two chili peppers, a lime, four peaches and a seasoning pack. A recipe is printed on the reverse side of the label.

Bedwell said the retail price of the kit would likely range from $2.99 to $3.99.

“The timing of the release of the peach salsa kit is to permit retailers to take advantage of the Independence Day holiday,” Bedwell said.

The salsa kits are being packed at plants in Reedley, Calif., and Los Angeles, locations close to California peach orchards. Because the peaches in the salsa kits are picked fresh, Bedwell said retailers could expect shelf life of 10 days or longer. Z&S chose fancy lady and rich lady varieties for the salsa kits.

Bedwell said sales of the company’s original Old El Paso salsa kits, which debuted in December, slowed after the Super Bowl. The exception to the sagging sales, he said, was in the East where demand remained strong. He said sales began climbing nationwide during the spring.

The original salsa kits are available year-round, Bedwell said, and are sold in 20-ounce clamshells. Each kit contains fresh tomatoes and chili peppers, an onion, a lime and a seasoning pack.
