A team of international researchers, including ones from Virgnia Tech University in Blacksburg, has successfully sequenced the genome of the potato, called by some the world's third most importnant crop.

The Potato Genome Sequencing Consortium focused on decoding a small inbred tuber rather than today's commercial hybrid varieties.

But they say all potatoes are similar, so genes for desired trait are found in similar locations among all potatoes.
