Don LaBonte, a sweet potato breeder at Louisiana State University's AgCenter, recently was recognized with the Doyle Chambers Research Award.
Stationed at the AgCenter since 1988, LaBonte recently released two new improved varieties designed to replace the industry standard, Beauregard, according to a news release.
They are Orleans, which is sweeter, and 07-146, a higher-yielding root designed for the processing sector.
Beauregard was released in 1987.
The award, presented annually through the LSU Foundation, is made annually to a scientist who during his or her career at the AgCenter has made significant contributions to the industry.
